Cassadaga village historian John Sipos was the recent guest speak at the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society in Fredonia. Sipos has been the village historian for nearly six years, and a resident of the village for four decades. During that time, Sipos has collected many articles of history on the village, and kept large notebooks which he uses for display purposes when talking about the village history. The recent talk included the history of many of the people who built the village over the last two hundred years. Sipos said that there are many people of the village who worked to form the village, and that he was only able to discuss a fraction of the many. Using poster boards with names in chronological order, Sipos talked about how these people played their role in the development of the village. The speech brought together the many names which are still a part of the village. His historical presentation began with the first settlers in 1809, to the first wedding, the formation of the cemetery, the incorporation of the village, the history of the post office, the development of the Churches, and the many places of businesses located in the village. Much has changed said Sipos, and businesses were formed and disappeared, but the uniqueness of the village still remains. Sipos brought to the discussion an old hand carved chair made in the original Fredrickson furniture factory and an original water bottle used more than 100 years ago. The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society meets on the third Tuesday evening of each month in the Fredonia Library except during the months of December, January and February at 6:30 p.m. New members are always welcome.
