Introduction
This publication is an attempt to identify Civil War veterans who had an association with the Town of Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York.
We started out with a list of approximately 75 names of men who served from the town based on the Muster Roll book housed in the Town offices. We expanded our criteria to include any kind of association to the Town. Names were included if they lived, died or were buried in the Town. If they enlisted or mustered in there or if we could prove they had spent any time in the Town. Information was gleaned from records at the Fenton History Center, records in the holdings of the Chautauqua County Historical Society , information at the Chautauqua County court house , census records and many local family histories. When we finished we had identified over 400 of these soldiers and had pictures for more than 60 of them.
The information contained herein is arranged in the following order: Name ….. Enlistment Date …. Unit Served With …. Date of Birth ….. Parents ….. Spouse …. Children ….. Date of Death ….. Burial Site ….. Personal and service related data
Each soldiers name serves as an index of those who served and an index of collateral names is included at the end of the book.
A great deal of credit for this publication has to be given to Frank Schruis. Frank spent untold hours scouring records and censuses and making contacts with local and not so local residents to fill in blanks and obtain pictures. Teresa Johnson also donated a lot of time in helping to obtain photographs.
While we do not maintain that this is a complete listing of these veterans, we do feel we have made every attempt to make it as complete as possible. There were several young men listed in the 1855 census who would have been old enough to have served, but we were unable to definitively identify them. ….. Donna J. Johnson ….. 2003
